What to expect at your first tribal tattoo session

Updated 20 February 2026

If you have never sat for tribal work, the process differs from getting a small flash piece, mostly because the design does not exist yet when you walk in.

Before the day

You’ll have had a consultation. That’s where the piece is discussed — what it needs to say, your family background if it’s relevant, placement, and how it fits your work and sport. A deposit secures the date.

On the day

Bring: photo ID, a full stomach, water, and something to keep you occupied. Wear: clothing that gives access to the area without needing to strip.

Design. Placement is mapped, then most of the work is drawn freehand directly on your body. This takes time and it is not wasted time — it is why the panels follow your deltoid instead of sitting on it. You’ll see and agree the design before any needle work.

Tattooing. Solid blackwork is a grind rather than a sharp pain. Ribs, sternum, inner arm and the back of the knee are the honest hotspots. Say when you need a break — sitting still through agony makes the line work worse, not braver.

Session length

Expect three to five hours for a first session. Large pieces are built over multiple sessions, spaced two to three weeks apart to let each stage heal.

Afterwards

You’ll be wrapped and given aftercare instructions. Read the aftercare guide before you go home.
